Mike Utley, who suffered a spinal cord injury while playing American football nearly 20 years ago, has spoken of his recovery.
Utley, who played for the Detroit Lions, has regained the full use of his shoulders, arms and hands since suffering the spinal injury, according to the Detroit Free Press.
After the accident he set up the Mike Utley Foundation to raise money for research into spinal injuries and to provide assistance to patients and their families.
"I'm living every day the game they call life," he said.
"One day you'll meet your maker. You won't get a second chance."
Former teammate Eddie Murray said that his friend is "living proof" that it is possible to recover from injury and have a life.
The dangers of American football have been highlighted by a recent report claiming that Cincinnati Bengals player Chris Henry, who died last year, had underlying chronic brain damage suffered as a result of repeated knocks to the head.
