Suffering a spinal cord injury has meant that Alan Cook has spent the last five years of his life in a wheelchair, it has been reported.
Speaking to the Daily Record, he said that this not held him back from living a full and rewarding life.
He told the newspaper that among a range of activities that he still likes to do are skiing, water-skiing and sailing and has not been held back by his injury.
Mr Cook suffered a catastrophic spinal injury after he drunkenly fell through a second floor window at a friend's flat in Edinburgh in 2005.
Since then he has worked extremely hard at improving his quality of life with friends, family and medical staff.
"The work you have to do is incredibly hard and there are days when you think you will never be able to do what is being asked of you," he explained.
"Then you remember the guy in the bed next to you who broke his neck so can't use his arms, and suddenly being paralysed from the sternum down doesn't seem too bad."
He even met his physiotherapist girlfriend as a result of his spinal injury.
According to spinal injury charity Aspire, 1,200 people are paralysed every year in the UK.
