A new complication resulting from stem cell therapy, which is seen as a major source of potential spinal cord injury treatments, has been observed in a patient, it has been claimed.
Hitherto unseen complications appeared, resulting in the removal of a kidney from the patient, according to a report in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
The patient was suffering from a severe kidney disease, but the report authors say that the therapy, instead of benefitting her, may have harmed her.
Dr Thirabanjasak, who was involved in the removal and analysis of the kidney, said: "This type of lesion has never been described before in patients, and we believe that this is either formed directly by the stem cells that were injected or that the stem cells caused these masses to form."
Blood vessel and bone marrow masses may be the result of some stem cell therapies, the report concluded.
Recently, the International Society for Stem Cell Research issued a separate warning to people suffering from spinal cord injuries.
It urged people to remain cautious about clinics springing up in various countries that purport to offer stem cell-based treatment.
