Sufferers of spinal cord injuries could benefit from better treatments after researchers in Canada received a major cash boost.
The Hotchkiss Brain Institute in Calgary, a leader in stem cell research and studies into nerve regrowth, has won a £1.5 million grant to further its advances in these fields.
Paul Breen, of spinal injury experts Serious Law, welcomed the announcement.
"Spinal cord injuries, although not common, have a devastating effect on victims," he said.
"Any research that offers hope of increased mobility, a greater chance of recovery and a return to an almost normal life is to be welcomed with open arms."
The news from Canada could mean advancements in treatments of spinal injuries could be happening soon, he added.
Staying in Canada, it was reported recently that a team at the University of Alberta made a breakthrough in the field of spinal cord injuries with research into serotonin receptors on nerve cells.
