Youngsters get in the swim for spinal cord injury charity

A spinal cord injury charity is to set to receive a boost to its coffers thanks to the efforts of three youngsters.

Holly Portz, Kate Hodson and Katrin Blears, who are all nine-years-old, are to swim 22 miles as part of a relay challenge for Aspire, the Wharfedale Observer relayed.

The distance is equivalent to a trip from Dover to Calais in France, but will take place in a pool in Ilkley rather than the Channel.

During the 12 weeks of the challenge, the trio will aim to raise cash for the non-profit organisation, which supports people with back ailments through a range of programmes.

It estimates 40,000 people live with the injury in the UK and is geared towards offering help with housing, mobility and research.

An adult Channel swim recently took place to raise funds, which saw participants reach French shores in 14 hours and 27 minutes.

Two of the seven-strong team were spinal cord injury sufferers themselves and were commended by the charity's bosses.
