Woman 'doesn't regret spinal injury'

A woman who sustained a spinal injury in a motorbike crash has said she does not regret the accident as, without it, she may have never met her surgeon, who she is now married to.

The accident broke Melanie Davies' back between her shoulder blades and she was left paralysed from the chest-down, the Daily Mail reported.

Speaking to the newspaper, surgeon Mike Davies, now 68, said: "In all my years of practice, I had never seen anything quite like Melanie's injuries."

Mr Davis operated, but with no success, the newspaper reported.

Mrs Davis went on to became a fundraiser and public speaker on the issues of spinal injury and set up her own charity called Treatment, Rehabilitation, Exercise and Therapy (TREAT).

Throughout this time she remained in contact with Mr Davis and they married five years ago.

She said: "Some people might see my life as some kind of tragedy. But I wouldn't swap it for anything.

"Without that accident, my life would not have been half so rich as it has been. And, more to the point, Mike and I would never have found each other."

Mrs Davies has recently written her autobiography, titled Never Say Die, her share of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the TREAT Trust.
