A car accident in which three people suffered suspected spinal cord injuries has led to calls for new traffic-calming measures to be introduced in Edinburgh.
In the incident, which occurred at about 23:30 BST on Sunday (March 28th), a car left Gilmerton Station Road and finished up approximately 30 metres away in a field, the Scotsman reports.
One person had to be cut free from the car, while another three were thrown out of the vehicle.
According to the news provider, councillor Tom Buchanan has said that he will be raising the issue of road safety with the police in south Edinburgh and with the local transport committee.
Mr Buchanan, who represents Liberton/Gilmerton, said: "This just underlines the need for traffic-calming measures on this road. It is known as a bit of a rat run."
Meanwhile, a scientist in New Zealand has warned that children wearing ill-fitting seatbelts may be at greater risk of spinal injuries.
Voxy.co.nz reports that Dr Gabrielle Nuthall of Starship's Paediatric Intensive Care Unit believes that injuries to the abdominal region and head can also be linked to inappropriate seatbelts.
