British surgeons have successfully removed four vertebrae from the back of a disabled child, in an operation that could have resulted in spinal injury.
Eight-year-old Sebastian Kit was unable to sit down properly because of a bulge in his spine that resembled a hairline kink in a racetrack, reports the Sun.
However, a team led by consultant surgeon Nick Boeree undertook an 11-hour operation to remove a six-inch section of Sebastian's vertebrae.
Speaking to the newspaper about how he felt prior to the operation, Mr Boeree said: "For someone who has to spend their life in a wheelchair, not being able to sit, or lie in bed, is a disaster.
"I looked at the X-ray and my heart sank."
In December, a study conducted by researchers at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore in New York suggested that overweight children are more likely to develop back pain and spinal abnormalities.
