Prizes recently handed out for excellence in the stem cell (SC) arena could remind scientists of debates in recent years about its possible effectiveness for treating spinal cord injuries.
John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka have been honoured by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation for their breakthrough research in SC and nuclear programming.
The pair are from Cambridge and Kyoto Universities respectively and were commended for opening new avenues in this area of medicine.
Handing out the accolades, the president of the Lasker Foundation Maria Freire stated: "Lives everywhere may be saved and improved because of their bold innovations."
Earlier this year, Swedish researcher and founder of NureoNova Dr Jonas Frisen stated SC medicine was in an "extremely exciting phase" at the moment.
He believes because spinal cord and brain injuries use more hospital provisions than any other medical condition, research and development in this area should press ahead.
