Spinal injury victims 'need strong support'

People recovering from a spinal injury can overcome great emotions with strong support, it has been suggested.

Anger, hostility, sadness, panic, shame, helplessness and vulnerability are among the feelings sufferers of such a medical condition can experience during recuperation, explained an article on Injuryboard.com.

However, it noted while it is likely sufferers will go through such a range of emotions, the majority go on to adapt to their injury over time.

The article asserted research proves most people in the situation become generally satisfied with life over a period of time and are no more depressed than able-bodied people.

"It takes strong support to overcome these feelings and issues, but it can be done with the right help," stated the website.

"For many people who suffer spinal cord injuries, life afterwards is not always tragic."

The website recommended a book, which might be useful for the friends and family of someone who has been involved in such an accident.

Described as "informative and interesting", Spinal Cord Injury: Functional Rehabilitation is written by Martha Freeman Somers.
