Advances in spinal injury treatment have helped to mitigate the impact of long-term problems on people's lives.
In an article for the Scotsman, Dan Burden of the Spinal Injuries Association explained that being able to treat patients at the scene of an accident as well as at hospital has had an important effect.
However, he wrote that it can be "some time" before the full impact of a spinal injury is known.
Mr Burden also noted that many people are perfectly capable of going back to doing the things they did before their accident, such as employment and sport, although the recovery process is often slow.
In September 2009, researchers at Ohio State University found evidence that the immune cells that often collect in the spinal fluid and release antibodies following spinal injury may actually worsen the extent of the damage in a patient.
This underlines the importance of early treatment for spinal injury.
