Spinal injury survivor speaks of how far he has come

A man with a spinal injury has spoken about how far he has come since the accident which left him wheelchair-bound nine years ago.

Keith Shirk dove into the North Atlantic Ocean back in June 2001 and hit his head on a sandbar, the Sunday News reports.

Mr Shirk was paralysed from the chest down as a result of the spinal injury he sustained.

Since then, he has achieved a specialised technology degree from York Technical Institute in the US and started a draftsman/designer job.

He uses a manual wheelchair and drives a specially-adapted Chevrolet Express van using hand controls.

Mr Shirk admitted that progress has been slow but that he is proud of what he has achieved.

"It's pretty hard to see it, living day to day, but I have come a long way," he explained to the newspaper.

In the UK, a race horse owner recently announced that he is sponsoring the Spinal Research Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Race Festival on March 16th.
