A rugby union player who has suffered a spinal injury faces surgery and a three-month rehabilitation programme, it has been reported.
England star Phil Vickery was struck down with the ailment during a match with Racing Metro last week, which has led his club Wasps to decide to take the prop to the operating table.
A statement from the Guinness Premiership side said: "A collective decision by Phil, the consultant, Wasps' medical team and England has been made this week to progress with surgery."
The Daily Mirror suggested there is a "growing fear" within the sport that players are being put at risk by increasing physical demands.
Vickery is not the only sports star who has battled a spinal injury recently.
Manchester United's summer signing Gabriel Obertan spent his first few months at the club taking part in a rehabilitation programme for a back problem.
The winger spent some of his time out working on a garden, Academy director at the Red Devils Brian McClair told the news source.
