When rehabilitating spinal injury patients, it is important to offer painkillers before attempting movement-based techniques, it has been asserted.
Speaking to NurseWeek, medic Marlene Rose explained administering drugs can be one of the only ways sufferers can bear to get on their feet initially.
The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital staff member stated: "Spinal stenosis and any spine-related injury results in some of the most intense pain during rehab and therapy."
Once these sessions have been completed, it is important to offer adequate rest periods, she added.
After 36 years in her profession, Ms Rose said some aspects of the role have changed such as the use of technology but understanding how to offer support has not altered.
In related news, scientists at Neuralstem recently announced they are to undertake a clinical trial of a treatment for spinal injuries.
Researchers will ascertain how new drugs affect the lumbar area of the spinal cord.
