Spinal injury sufferer 'set for Premier League bow'

A footballer who suffered a spinal injury is set to pull on his boots in the Premier League for the first time.

Frenchman Gabriel Obertan has been undergoing rehabilitation for a back problem since his summer move to Manchester United from homeland club Bordeaux, according to reports.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is apparently expecting to be able to pick the winger in the coming weeks as the under-21 international resumes full training.

It was reported earlier this month that Obertan took up gardening as part of his rehab.

Academy director at United Brian McClair told the Daily Mirror the youngster had developed a "keen interest" in all things green-fingered.

Another soccer star who has suffered a spinal injury is former Fulham striker Barry Hayles.

The forward, who now plays for Cheltenham Town, told the Independent he feared his career was over after suffering the trauma.

At the time, doctors warned the star he may never walk again after his neck muscles tightened up after games.
