Spinal injury sufferer: Anything is possible through hard work

A spinal injury sufferer set to take on a gruelling challenge has revealed hard work and the support of her friends will drive her on.

Karen Darke - who was paralysed after tumbling off a cliff at the age of 21 – is planning to cross 1,200 km of the Antarctic using arm power.

The Pole of Possibility jaunt is aimed at boosting charity coffers to the tune of £1 million and is the first attempt of its kind.

A team of six people – including climber Andy Kirkpatrick and fitness instructor Roddy McLaughlin – are setting off on the journey in 2011.

In order to cover their costs, the group need to raise £100,000 in the preceding years, with business partnerships set to contribute to the pot.

Commenting, Ms Darke said those who are determined to succeed can "achieve almost anything".

"We hope our journey will demonstrate that the impossible is a more a figment of our imagination than a reality and will inspire a sense of possibility in others," she added.
