Spinal injury-preventing helmet in development

A helmet that could prevent spinal injury is being developed by engineers in Canada.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver are in the process of developing the helmet, which would not only protect against concussions and trauma to the skull and brain in a head-on collision, but would prevent spinal injuries that cause paralysis.

The Pro-Neck-Tor helmet has an outer layer similar to that of ordinary helmets used in sports, but it also has a rotating inner layer.

Peter Cripton, the mechanical engineer and biomechanics specialist at UBC who led the project, told the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Technology Review: "The main purpose of helmets, whether in sports or transportation, is always to prevent brain injuries. We're trying to do something quite different,"

In December, the Times of India reported that more than 400 delegates from countries across the world met in India at a conference on spinal injuries.

The delegates learned, among other things, about innovative surgical techniques designed to repair damage caused by spinal injuries.
