Spinal injury patients warned over bogus stem cell treatment

People suffering from spinal injuries have been warned that many stem cell treatments being offered to them are not the genuine article.

The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) has urged people suffering from spinal cord injuries to remain cautious about clinics springing up in various countries that purport to offer stem cell-based treatment.

In response to this worrying trend, ISSCR has launched a website that offers advice and guidance for people looking at stem cell treatments, entitled A Closer Look at Stem Cell Treatments.

Irving Weissman, president of the ISSCR, said: "Stem cells do hold tremendous promise for the treatment of many serious diseases."

"Yet there are organizations out there that are preying on patients' hopes."

These organisations offer stem cell treatments for conditions where the current science does not support its benefit or safety, he added.

Stem cell research is seen as potentially useful in the treatment of spinal cord injuries.

A Canadian biotechnology firm recently said that a development in stem cell research from their laboratories could help with conditions including spinal cord injuries.
