Spinal injury patient regains sensation thanks to stem cell therapy

A man has regained reflexes and sensation after receiving stem call therapy to try and cure his spinal injury.

Deepak Singh, from northern India, was paralysed and bed-ridden for seven years after sustaining a spinal injury when he was shot by a business rival, the Times of India reports.

The 34-year-old was injected with mesenchymal stem cells, which are derived from the outer lining of the umbilical cord of a newborn baby, therefore the difficult and painful process of extracting bone marrow from Mr Singh was not required.

"I can feel the tickling sensation as well as pain. After so many years, I feel that the lower part of my body actually exists,'' Mr Singh told the newspaper.

B S Rajput, who is currently treating Mr Singh, said he will have to undergo physiotherapy for at least a year and will have to be injected with another round of stem cells after three months.

Recently, a British man who was paralysed in a car accident and told it was unlikely he would ever walk again underwent successful spinal injury surgery and is now able to stand unassisted, This is London reports.
