Spinal injury man 'inspires other survivors'

A man in the US who made an almost complete recovery from a severe spinal cord injury is set to embark on an epic bike ride to inspire and raise money for others with similar injuries.

An article in the Utah Park Record stated that Kevin Yolken lost feeling in his legs and was unable to walk after a skiing accident five years ago, reports BrainandSpinalCord.org.

However, after plenty of therapy and rehabilitation - along with a hefty dose of determination - he retained the ability to walk and returned to sports such as skiing and surfing that he had enjoyed before his accident.

According to the report, Mr Yolken's "next triumphant act" will be to cycle 1,500 miles as part of his fundraising efforts.

Meanwhile, the BBC News website has reported the story of Melanie Davies from Wales, who has been "celebrating" the 30th anniversary of the day she was paralysed from the chest down in a motorcycle accident.

She celebrates the day each year because she was told at the time that she would not survive for very long and, also, the surgeon who operated on her went on to become her husband.
