Spinal injury man died after being knocked into swimming pool

A man who suffered a spinal injury that left him paralysed died four years later as a result of his injuries, an inquest has heard.

Ian Corkhill was on a family holiday in Fuerteventura when he sustained a spinal injury after a child accidentally knocked him over into a half-full swimming pool.

The accident left him paralysed after he banged his head on a ledge.

Mr Corkhill, a father of four, suffered difficulty breathing and was prone to chest infections due to his injuries.

The inquest heard how this was exacerbated by an inability to cough and clear his lungs and a verdict of accidental death was recorded by coroner Michael Sheffield.

Mr Corkhill's widow said: "I am relieved the inquest is over, but nothing could ever numb the pain of losing him.

"The past five years have been utterly devastating, first coming to terms with his injuries, then losing him last October."

It follows news that another British holidaymaker was paralysed by an injury sustained while on board a luxury train in Thailand.

Sylvia Brown suffered a spinal injury after being thrown to the ground when the Eastern Orient Express train braked suddenly.
