Spinal injury drug 'shows no cysts in latest tests'

A spinal injury drug currently under development has formed no cysts on animals during a recent study.

Geron Corporation is testing GRNOPC1 in clinical trials and previous tests showed a low number of creatures injected with the medication developed these swellings.

The company pointed out the cysts were confined to the spinal injury site, did not grow or increase, had no unfavourable effects and did not develop into tumours.

In a more recent study in rats, a manufactured batch of the drug showed no signs of the growths developing.

"We have submitted these data to the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] and are in discussions with the agency to answer its questions and proceed with the clinical trial," asserted Geron.

The biopharmaceutical company added it is common practice to maximise the characteristics of a product - as well as improve the efficiency and scale of the manufacturing process – and concluded it was committed to doing to this.

Earlier this month, the FDA placed Geron's investigational new drug application of GRNOPC1 on hold while the agency reviewed this new study data.
