Spinal injury crash victim becomes safety champion

A man that suffered a spinal injury in a road crash has become a safety champion for commercial fleets.

Leigh Stiff has become the 39th business champion under the government-backed Driving for Better Business campaign from RoadSafe.

Drawing on his experience of the accident, which brought an end to his career, he has been offering tips on work driver safety to fine joinery supplier Hannaford, based in St Albans.

Since introducing initiatives based on safety guidance, the firm's fleet of 14 company cars and 12 long combination vehicles has been involved in just two at-fault crashes and two non-fault incidents in the last year.

Mr Stiff said: "The important thing is controlling and minimising such an eventuality through effective management systems.

"Management and communication makes all the difference, thus ensuring drivers do not injure themselves or damage the company's vehicles and reputation."

His comments follow research by Halfords, published on February 26th, which suggests that mobile users are still using their handsets at the wheel and putting other road users at risk, despite changes to the law.
