Spinal injury conference ends today

Today is the final day of a three-day international conference on spinal injuries held in India.

Over 400 delegates from countries across the world, including India, Germany, the UK and America are attending the conference at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the Times of India reported.

On Sunday (December 20th), three workshops took place in which those attending could observe and practice minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques.

According to the newspaper, German surgeon Dr Jens Timmerman demonstrated his pioneering technique of excision of spinal discs without making surgical incisions.

Also on Sunday, professor Raj Bahadur, from GMCH, spoke about complex injuries of the cervical spine and he demonstrated a new and emerging surgical technique in which cervical pedicle screws are treated.

Video demonstrations by well-known international surgeons of various surgical techniques were shown to delegates.

Meanwhile, researchers at Middle Tennessee State University have been using underwater treadmills in the rehabilitation of patients with spinal injuries, Tennessean.com reported.
