Technology that is able to produce cells and can be used to treat spinal cord injury has been patented.
Neuralstem gained exclusive rights to the product named Transplantation of Human Neural Cells for Treatment of Neurodegenerative Conditions 11/281,640 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Richard Garr, president and chief executive officer of the company behind the technology, highlighted that the rights cover the manufacturing processes of future products in all areas of brain and spinal cord through until July 2026.
"The transplantation of our neural stem cells to treat degenerative conditions of the nervous system is at the heart of Neuralstem's mission," he stated.
"We are gratified to add this important core technology patent to our portfolio."
As well as developing treatments for traumatic spinal cord injury, the company also works on therapies for Huntington's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Earlier this year, Neuralstem was granted a patent for chemicals intended to grow new brain cells, which cold be used for people suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
