Spinal cord injury patient 'making slow progress'

The mother of a spinal cord injury patient is having to rely on lip-reading to communicate with her son as he makes slow progress in his recovery, it has been reported.

Wali Wright suffered the ailment during a football match, leaving him unable to speak, the Accent Advocate relayed.

Following two operations, the 25-year-old sportsman is able to move his shoulders again after medics feared he could be paralysed due to fractures and swelling in his neck and back.

Speaking to the news source, his mum Piola said her offspring was doing "pretty good".

"The doctors say it's going to take him a while to get his nerve system back working," she added.

Last month, the Boston University of Medicine speculated its research on players of high-impact sports could lead to new rules and guidelines.

It is especially concerned about concussions caused by clashes on the field, which can cause brain injuries.
