Spinal cord injury patient 'develops artistic talent'

A man who suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralysed from the neck down has discovered he has a flair for art as he battles his way towards his goal of walking again.

Jared Dunten of Texas lost the use of his limbs in a diving accident but since then he has devoted his efforts to painting, reports Kens5.com.

Commenting on his accident, Mr Dunten said: "I really thought I'd be up and walking in about six to eight months - nine years later that is still the goal."

Five of Mr Dunten's paintings are on display at the Houston hospital where he received treatment, the news source reveals.

In addition to developing his artistic abilities, Mr Dunten is determined to raise funds for stem cell therapy research and has set up a foundation with his friends to support such studies.

Earlier this month, it was reported that scientists may soon be able to predict whether or not a stem cell will be suitable for use in spinal injury treatment.

Researchers at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York say they have discovered a new method for predicting how stem cells will divide with 99 per cent accuracy.
