A woman who suffered a spinal cord injury has spoken of her determination to get back on her feet and back to work.
Nicola Shipway, a police community support officer, was riding her bike when a car sped around the corner on the wrong side of the road and caused her to dismount, reports the Oldham Advertiser.
The 35-year-old spent five days in hospital with two cracked vertebrae and the spinal cord injury meant that she had to sit out last weekend's Blackpool marathon.
Ms Shipway is unable to say at this stage when she will be able to return to work - but revealed that she cannot wait to get back on her bike.
"When you are told you have broken bones in your back you always think the worst. I thought at one point I'd go straight under the car so I'm lucky in a way that there is no permanent damage," she told the newspaper.
Meanwhile, Dr Ranjan Gupta of the University of California, Irvine, has suggested that current research into new treatments for spinal cord injuries is unlikely to discover a so-called magic bullet, but a multidisciplinary approach is most likely to bring success.
