Spinal cord injury man records album

A man with a severe spinal cord injury has amazed his carers by recording an album.

Brian Newman of Swansea, who controls his wheelchair with his chin, recorded the collection of songs by using specialist light beam technology, reports the South Wales Evening Post.

Mr Newman, 59, suffered the spinal injury in 2000 and just over the past 12 months he has been taking part in music therapy as part of his ongoing rehabilitation.

"No-one could have ever imagined with the kind of injury he has, and at the age of 59, it could ever be possible for him to release and record an album," Anwen Mulligan, a music therapist at Mr Newman's Awel-y-Mor care home in Gorseinon, told the news provider.

"It's incredibly empowering for him and an inspiration to others," she added.

Meanwhile, Kimberly Sena Moore has stated in an article for the Psychology Today blog that music therapists are much like personal trainers.

She pointed out that music therapists assess a patient's individual needs, as a personal trainer would assess someone's fitness level, before devising a treatment plan tailored to those needs.
