Spinal cord injury footballer 'aims to rebuild life'

An Indian man who dreamed of becoming a successful footballer is now attempting to rebuild his life after a spinal cord injury cut short his career, it is reported.

Jayant Roy was forced into early retirement from the game and, although he subsequently found alternative employment, he says that he now needs to earn more money as he looks to transform his fortunes, according to news.asiaone.com.

Prior to the spinal cord injury, he had represented Uttar Pradesh in the Santosh Trophy and had been chosen for the Dehra Dun Sports Academy.

"My father used to say football built nobody's future in this country and he was correct," Mr Roy told the news provider.

"I was so passionate about the game, I completely ignored his advice. It's been my life's biggest mistake," he added.

In other news, people in Indonesia who experience spinal cord injuries may now be able to access a new form of treatment.

The Jakarta Post reported that minimally invasive spinal surgery leads to a quicker recovery than existing techniques because it limits the damage to tissue.
