Son's spinal injury was 'worst nightmare' for mum

A soldier serving in Afghanistan who sustained a spinal injury will never be the same again, his mother has said.

The spinal injury suffered by Joe Edwards has left him in a wheelchair and often feeling depressed, his mother Cheryl explained in an article for the Daily Mail.

She said:"He knows he is never going to be the way he was before he went to Afghanistan, but has been incredibly heartened by the hope he will be able to stand again.

"He has good days when he feels well and optimistic, but others when he is incredibly frustrated and low."

The Welsh Guardsman will require more surgery on his spine, she added.

A recent study carried out by a team at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine has offered some hope to spinal injury sufferers.

The research looked at neurons on the spinal cord which operate simple functions such as walking and bladder control and found that serotonin receptors remain active on these, suggesting that a hormone based treatment could be possible.
