Spinal cord injury researchers must continue to drive forward in their quest to find a cure, it has been asserted.
Charity founder Nick Buoniconti stated the illness "can happen to any one of us", meaning it is essential scientists strive for breakthroughs.
He made the remarks as the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis announced an anonymous benefactor has ploughed $10 million (£6.2 million) into a new series of clinical trials.
The donation followed the recent 24th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner, which saw stars past and present pledge cash to help the non-profit organisation.
Commenting, Mr Buoniconti stated the support the body received was "astounding".
"I look forward to when we can walk side by side with those who are paralysed by spinal cord injury," he said.
One of the latest medical breakthroughs in this area saw paralysed rats run again after undergoing rhythmic circuitry treatments.
Scientists at the University of California Los Angeles suggested the techniques could be applied to humans in the future.
