Prompt spinal cord injury treatment 'essential'

The sooner that a spinal cord injury patient receives treatment, the greater the chances of success, an expert has said.

Dr Suzy Kim, a spinal injury expert who uses a wheelchair herself after breaking her neck in a surfing accident, stated that even simply moving a patient's muscles and joints for them in the early stages can be beneficial, reports physorg.com.

"We're learning more and more from basic science research that we need to activate a patient's nervous system sooner to begin rerouting neural pathways," commented Dr Kim, who works at UC Irvine Medical Center in the US.

Neurologically, there is typically a nine to 12-month window after a spinal cord injury for the recovery of function, the report adds.

Meanwhile, Jody Smith has pointed out on EmpowHer.com that the degree of paralysis from a spinal cord injury will to some extent be dictated by the how high up the spine the injury has occurred.
