Research that is currently taking place into cures for spinal cord injuries is "promising", according to an American expert.
Writing in the Daily, Dr Joanne Stolen explained that, since President Obama signed an executive order freeing federal funds for work on stem cells, research has "taken off" in America.
The former professor of microbiology writes that a number of studies that aim to find a cure for spinal injuries are also taking place in India and China.
New non-surgical treatments are also being attempted by researchers and could lead to drugs that improve mobility.
Dr Stolen describes how stem cells in the spinal cord of adults rarely grow and, if they do, they do so very slowly. However, recent experiments show that these cells, if grown in laboratories, can restore some function and movement.
India Today recently reported that a surgeon in China is to travel to India to teach medical professionals in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital a surgical procedure that he developed to restore bladder and bowel control of people with spinal cord injuries.
