Pharmacists 'may have key role in osteoporosis diagnosis'

Pharmacists could play a key role in identifying patients suffering from osteoporosis, which can lead to spinal injury, it has been claimed.

These health workers are often more easily accessible than doctors and other specialists and could play a greater role in health promotion and disease prevention, according to researchers at the University of Alberta.

The disease often goes undiagnosed, the university's Nese Yuksel explained, which is where pharmacists could play a key role.

In a study involving 262 patients at pharmacies across Alberta, participants that were part of an intervention group on whom pharmacists conducted an in-depth examination of symptoms were twice as likely to have sought further help.

This group were more likely to either get a bone density test or start osteoporosis medication to prevent deterioration that could lead to spinal injury.

Recent research by scientists at the Columbia University Medical Center indicated that inhibiting serotonin synthesis in the gut could help to cure osteoporosis.
