New clinic uses NASA technology to study spinal problems

A new chiropractic clinic has opened in Surrey offering a revolutionary treatment for people with back injuries, such as spinal injuries.

The Esher Chiropractic Centre has a spinal scanning system that is used by NASA to compare the muscle tone either side of the spines of astronauts before they go into space and again when they return, news website GetSurrey.co.uk reported.

Dr Joe-James Tilley works at the centre, which is to be paper-free, using fingerprint recognition technology in its waiting rooms to cut waiting times and reduce environmental waste.

Speaking to the website, the 23-year-old chiropractor said: "This allows me more time with the patient so I can interact with them more. I won't have to sit there writing loads of notes."

The doctor also told the website that he hopes to expand the clinic to the floor above and introduce yoga classes.

Meanwhile, scientists in America are researching spinal injuries and whether earlier intervention (within three days of the injury) can give further clues as to how nerve cells deteriorate and at what speed.
