Many adults suffering spinal injury 'don't know about it'

A surprising number of people suffer from spinal injury without realising it, according to a leading chiropractor.

Speaking to the Westerner, Dr David Weedon explained that back pain is not always caused by a specific spinal injury.

He told the newspaper: "It's not specifically from an injury like a herniated disc or a disc pushing on nerves.

"Fifty per cent of patients that come in and see me would suffer from some form of headache, migraine or tension around the head and neck, sometimes caused by accidents like car accidents or whiplash injuries."

Research carried out in August 2009 by University of Alberta scientists indicated that patients suffering from whiplash are likely to recover an average of three-times more quickly if they have positive expectations.

Those that took a positive attitude to recovery were found to recover 42 per cent faster.

In a similar study, Swedish researcher Lena Holm found that people that had low expectations of complete recovery were more likely to still feel symptoms six months later.
