A man who sustained a spinal cord injury in a car accident is using a hand-cycle to travel across Vietnam and Cambodia to raise money for a disability charity.
Ben Pickard was involved in a car crash 13 years ago which left him paralysed from a spinal injury, according to the Norwich Evening News.
He still has the use of his arms and is raising money on his hand-cycle later this month for the charity Regain, the newspaper reported.
Regain is the only charitable organisation dedicated solely to improving the independence of all British men and women who have become tetraplegic (sometimes referred to as quadriplegic) as a result of a competitive sports injury.
Car accidents are one of the common causes of spinal cord injury, according to the website spinalinjury.net.
The website said that spinal cord injury survivors should try and stay as active as their injury will allow and should avoid smoking as there is an increased incidence of skin sores, a decreased ability to heal following skin surgeries and a greater likelihood of atelectasis (collapsed lung).
