A man with a spinal injury has embarked on a 'walk of hope' which aims to save the Kalakala - the world's first stream line ferry - and raise awareness of green technologies and spinal cord injuries.
Steve Rodrigues, president of the Kalakala Alliance Foundation (KAF), began the 180-day walk at Washington's State Capital campus in Olympia, Washington.
The foundation, on a charter bus tour, is to visit national parks, maritime heritage sites, museums, hospitals and schools, educating citizens about the importance of protecting the nation's maritime heritage.
A documentary film about this heritage and the history of the Kalakala is to be created.
Speaking to the Peninsula daily news, Mr Rodrigues said that he plans to walk between 1,000 and 1,800 miles on the trip and hopes to meet US president Barack Obama in May.
An epic voyage was made earlier this month by another boat lover. British yachtsman Geoff Holt, who has a spinal injury, completed a 2,700-mile boat journey across the Atlantic.
