A man who suffered a spinal injury which made him quadriplegic is hoping to inspire others who have suffered the same fate by becoming the first disabled person to sail across the Atlantic Ocean.
Geoff Holt, a 42-year-old man who was hit by the spinal cord problem in 1984 at Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, hopes to sail his 18-foot catamaran Impossible Dream from Lanzarote back to the place where he had his accident, in a trip expected to last 17 days.
Accompanied by an assistant to help him in and out of his chair, as well as a cameraman, Mr Holt will be using high-tech equipment with the limited use of his hands to overcome his restrictions.
Commenting on the trip, which he set off for last Friday (December 10th), Mr Holt said: "It's not about being disabled. It's not about sailing the Atlantic Ocean. It's about demonstrating that disability need not be a barrier to achieving something positive in your life."
People wanting to follow the noble sailor on his journey will be able to see updates on his website at geoffholt.com.
