Man with spinal cord injury sails solo across Derwentwater

A man who sustained a spinal cord injury and was paralysed from the neck down four years ago has sailed solo across Derwentwater in Keswick.

Andy Walker, who is now 32, broke his neck in a diving accident while on holiday in Goa, Rochdale Online reported.

His feat on Derwentwater was the culmination of a week-long sailing course run by the Back-Up Trust charity, which law firm Irwin Mitchell sponsored him to take part in.

"I am always on the lookout for new challenges but this really pushed the boundaries of what I thought I could achieve and the feeling of freedom on the water is one I will never forget," Mr Walker said.

He added that he will be able to take his experience and use it in his work as a mentor to other people with injuries and disabilities.

Another man who suffered a spinal cord injury while diving in the Atlantic Ocean nine years ago has spoken of how far he has come since the incident.

The Sunday News reported that, since being paralysed from the chest down, Keith Shirk has achieved a higher education degree and has started a job as a designer.
