A grant of $1.8 million (£1.13 million) has been awarded to three research centres for stem cell development and clinical trials, which could help to cure spinal injuries.
The Jiangsu Government's Science and Technology Department awarded the Jiangsu Technological Achievements Transformational Grant to Shenzhen Beike Biotechnology Company, Jiangsu University and Nanjing University's Drum Tower Hospital.
The funding will support the research and development of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUC-MSC) technologies.
Jiangsu University's is to use the funding to create animal models for testing hUC-MSCs' potential to treat disorders such as brain injury, spinal cord injury, liver disease and kidney damage.
Dr Sean Hu, chief executive officer and chairman of Beike Biotechnology, said: "I am confident that with continued support from both Jiangsu Province and China's government, this collaboration will continue to produce groundbreaking work in the field of stem cells."
Recent research by the Canadian-based McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health shows that China made 1,116 contributions to scientific journals on regenerative medicine topics in 2008.
