Kieran Richardson: Spinal injury 'made me a better person'

Premier League footballer Kieran Richardson has revealed that suffering a serious spinal cord injury has changed him for the better.

The Sunderland star told the Daily Mail: "I've had a serious injury here and it was not a nice period in my life. It was a nightmare but it made me a better person and a better player."

Richardson also said he hasn't ruled out returning to the England squad after recovering from the spinal injury that is reported to have threatened his career.

But first and foremost in his mind is performing well for his club for the remainder of this campaign and into next season as he looks to put his injury woes well and truly behind him.

He will have been delighted last weekend, as he not only managed to play a full 90 minutes but Sunderland also secured a vital 2-1 win over relegation rivals Burnley.

Fraizer Campbell and Darren Bent scored the all-important goals for Sunderland in a deserved victory.
