Hip issues 'could lead to spinal injury'

Problems with hips can have effects on other parts of the body and could even contribute to a spinal injury, it has been suggested.

Speaking to online resource Lansingstatejournal, Jermaine Alexander, personal training manager at the Michigan Athletic Club, explained that if people carry out strenuous activity with tight hips, they could injure themselves.

He explained that problems with the joints can make it hard to move quickly and - in severe circumstances - result in lower back pain.

"The three most common injuries we see are lower back pain, knee strain and tightening of the hips. That lack of flexibility can cause other problems," Mr Alexander noted.

According to the publication, treatment for back pain caused by hip problems should be looked at on a case by case basis and consulting a doctor could be a wise move as they will be able to recommend expert help.

The news follows the announcement that a new body that aims to provide help to people with spinal injuries - the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals - has been formed.
