England rugby player recovers from spinal injury to play again

Rugby player Steve Thompson, who suffered spinal injury over two years ago, is to be reunited with Jonny Wilkinson today for the first time since the 2003 World Cup.

Thompson suffered spinal injury in January 2007 while playing for Northampton and he retired from his rugby career two months later, after ¬surgery which involved the complete ¬replacement of the sixth disc of his spinal column.

He received a £500,000 insurance payout but repaid it in order to resume his career in France.

Dylan Hartley, Thompson's successor at Saints, had been ear-marked to start Saturday's match against Australia but a hamstring strain in training means he is relegated to the bench with Thompson playing in his place.

Thompson was part of the England team that won the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Sydney.

Last month it was reported fellow England star Phil Vickery, who also suffered a spinal injury, was facing surgery and a three-month rehabilitation programme.
