Geron Corporation has announced that it has been given clearance by the Food and Drug Administration to continue the world's first human clinical trial of a hESC-based therapy: GRNOPC1 for acute spinal cord injury.
The company announced a plan to re-initiate the Phase I clinical trial of GRNOPC1, a human embryonic stem cell product, in patients with complete thoracic spinal cord injury and to support future expansion of the trial to patients with cervical injuries.
GRNOPC1 is being developed, initially, for spinal cord injury, but Geron is also exploring application for other neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis, stroke and Alzheimer disease.
Geron expects the clinical trial to be re-initiated in the third quarter of 2010.
Incorporated in the state of Delaware in 1990, Geron has been in business since 1992. Its headquarters and main facilities are located in Menlo Park, California.
It has also completed Phase I clinical trials for two anti-cancer treatments.
