A surgeon in China has developed a surgical procedure for treating patients with Spina bifida and other spinal injury disorders and is travelling to India to share his knowledge.
Spina bifida is a congenital defect that patients often have since birth but it can also be caused by spinal injuries. Patients with the condition often have no control over their bowels or bladder.
Dr Chuanguo Xiao is visiting Mumbai for a week to conduct surgery to alleviate this problem in more patients and to train doctors at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on the procedure, India Today reports.
The treatment involves the re-routing of the nerves from the bladder and the bowels to the thighs and over 1,500 patients have received this treatment so far.
According to the newspaper, it usually takes between five and six months for the nerves to grow and the surgery to be effective.
Meanwhile, surgeons in America led by Dr Matthew Kaufman have successfully carried out an operation that has the potential to help people that have breathing difficulties due to spinal injuries.
