Wearing a back brace can reduce the risk of suffering a spinal cord injury, according to an expert.
In an article for Citizen-Times.com, physical therapist Damon Rouse stated that back braces can help to prevent injuries by "encouraging good body mechanics".
He revealed that many people attending his clinic often ask him whether back braces do more harm than good and his answer is an "unequivocally 'no'".
Mr Rouse continued: "This doesn't mean everyone should be wearing back braces, but just like ankle braces, back braces can provide biomechanical assistance to prevent injury, provide pain relief and continue with daily life."
Over-using the back muscles to lift or pull objects can lead to injury, he added, whereas a back brace can shift the force to the muscles of the legs, which are better equipped to deal with such tasks.
Meanwhile, another medical expert has spoken out about spinal cord injuries after Scottish rugby player Thom Evans was injured in a Six Nations Match against Wales last weekend.
Writing for the Scotsman, London School of Osteopathy lecturer Dawn Limbert stated that vertebral slippage can be a very serious injury but it is a relatively rare occurrence.
