New brain injury unit planned for Swindon

Proposals to build a new brain injury rehabilitation unit have been given the green light.

The Disabilities Trust submitted plans to create a centre dedicated to the service at Edison Park in Hindle Way, Dorcan, the Swindon Advertiser reports.

Speaking on behalf of the Trust, Mike McPeake said: "The proposed facility will provide a much-needed state-of-the-art facility not just for Swindon but for the south west region."

The independent unit will help people with an acquired brain injury through the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BRIT) division, which was described by Mr McPeake as witnessing increased demand.

He claimed the facility will be an extension of current services, in an area that is "under-represented".

Swindon Council approved the plans, which will see up to 70 jobs created in the town.

BRIT helps individuals regain the skills lost as a result of brain injury, whether caused by assault, stroke, road accident or illness.
