Female sex hormone progesterone could be used to combat brain injury, researchers believe.
A new trial is to study whether the hormone has a protective effect on the brain, which could cut swelling and improve mental recovery in brain injury patients, the Daily Mail reports.
The large-scale SyNAPSe research will enrol more than 1,200 participants, who will be given either a five-day intravenous infusion of progesterone or a placebo.
Scientists at the five hospitals taking part in the trial are looking at patients who have traumatic brain injury due to road accidents, sports injuries, falls and assaults.
Tony Belli, a consultant neurosurgeon at Southampton General Hospital, told the newspaper: "Although we have to be cautious, the rewards of this trial could be phenomenal - the results have the potential to significantly improve the outcome for patients with traumatic brain injuries."
This follows news that researchers at the San Antonio Military Medical Center are to try out a cognitive rehabilitation therapy to treat traumatic brain injury.
